VIX (Volatility Index)
The CBOE's measure of implied 30-day volatility on the S&P 500, sometimes called the 'fear gauge.'
Definition
The VIX is derived from S&P 500 options prices. Sustained levels above 30 coincide with growth scares; above 40 typically marks outright recession repricing or major financial stress events.
