SLOOS (Senior Loan Officer Opinion Survey)

The Fed's quarterly survey of senior loan officers on lending standards and loan demand.

Definition

SLOOS tightening above 40% of banks has preceded every recession since the survey began in 1990. The survey has a 6-9 month lead because loan-standards tightening takes time to flow through to actual loan contractions.
